Blackberry Cove is a West Virginian Appalachian mountain farm, full of lush vegetation and 'cove critters'. In this almanac-memoir, herbalist Linda Rago describes the seasons in Blackberry Cove, and the plants she finds there each month; wild and free to spring up wherever the wind carries their seed. Out of the mountain stillness, you'll hear the Appalachian grandmothers' words of wisdom and advice, their recipes, remedies, and legends of long ago when herbs were the only medicine and storytelling was an art. Discover the healing properties of each common 'weed' and the bounty each month has to offer - from the mullein of March to the wintergreen of February - 48 herbs in all. Try the recipes for traditional remedies, lotions and ointments, sauces, jellies, vinegars and teas in your own life and be grateful that Mother Nature's voice can still be heard. Spiral back to Blackberry Cove!

Ms. Rago is wonderful storyteller and a great teacher. As a person who is blessed enough to have inherited a granny woman tradition, I love reading about other's stories. I especially enjoy learning while I'm doing it.

Positives: there is more information here than what one can absorb in one reading. It's certainly not dry reading either. It has as much character as the Appalachians and those that called that area home. She paints a lovely picture of her home cove throughout the season and the traditions of the granny women shines through in a wonderful way.

The negatives; Well, there's not enough. I would love to read another book. And yes, there were just a few typos but I sometimes wonder if that is what happens when it is converted to Kindle format (what I purchased). As an herbalist myself I did disagree with her on the Jack-In-The-Pulpit preparation. You don't cook it for a long time but instead dry it for a long time. It's a moot point as she give you proper warning as to what happens if you use it, but if you do want to try it you must first dry it to brittle, then crumble it and dry it some more. If you don't do this it will feel like you just put pins, needles and sharp nails into your mouth. Poisoning is hard because most people could never swallow that painful of a mouthful.

But none of this took away from my total enjoyment of this wonderful book. I would love to see more discussion of the reality of folk healing, wild medicinals, and the old ways that includes black shuck and the headless travelers that seem to move through our wild places and civilized people no longer have the ability to see.

A great read. I wouldn't necessarily use this book for herbal treatment, but it was a great way to get into the mindset of one who lives with herbal medicine and the ways behind the folk medicine. Great depiction of mountain life for one who mostly must live outside of it, but still feels it in the blood. I am living a similar disconnect to the wild places I come from and feeling it just as acutely! Her writing is gorgeous! I will be reading more from this author.
Learned a great deal but also through the author's aesthetic perspective.
I highly recommend this book. It has been an invaluable resource.
