Full disclosure here. Author Gary L. Fisher has been a friend of mine for over twenty years. However, I think that the way I approached reading the book probably was more skeptically than for an author with whom I had no relationship. I was prepared to give the book an honest try, but I was prepared to abandon it if it was not worthy. I was surprised and really proud of Gary for penning this excellent tale. The primary characters are Grace and Charlie, both from a small Iowa town on the Mississippi River. They quickly evolve from playmates to a commitment to marry. There was only one thing that presented a problem. Charlie was determined to see the world before a wedding. The narrative follows his adventures, including his acquaintance with a few notable figures such as Buffalo Bill Cody and Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain.) Grace, on the other hand, is firmly rooted in her hard-scrabble farm existence with her family. However, she has some tricky and suspenseful situations at home, mostly with her nemesis Dugger, the local bully.
I thought that the story really grabbed me about a third of the way through. For the last, I read it in a couple of days. I really was hooked. I would say that there are some minor issues, but overall the writing is quite good, especially the dialogue.

Grace at the Gate A troubled journey edition by Gary L Fisher Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Grace at the Gate by Gary L. Fisher
You can’t lose by purchasing this book. It is a win-win purchase. Fisher does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. You will cry, laugh and get angry as you read about the adventures of Grace and Charles. I loved Grace’s father and his humor in keeping his wife at bay resulting from the situations that develop from Grace’s disobedience to her mother. If you love romance, there is love. If you a history buff, there is plenty of history woven into the story. If you love family, there is without question sibling rivalry and growing to appreciate what your sibling can contribute to your life. And in the end . . . well you will just have to read the story to find out. Be assured you will be glad you made this purchase.

I loved it! Just a delightful tall tale well-written and down to earth. I would recommend it to everyone especially Midwesterners and most especially anyone who ever attended Adel Jr. High and High School in Adel Iowa during the 1950s and knew the author as I did my friend Gary Fisher! And he can sing too!
