One of the best medical thrillers I've read. Compares easily to Robin Cook (I thought of Coma immediately), Tess Gerritsen, Michael Crichton; it is lighter reading than Patricia Cornwall and Stephen King.
The medical setting hits hard in the first chapter where Dr. Carl Corbin is faced with a patient who has a bizarre blood disorder he cannot cure. He is a physician with a specialty in cutting edge hematology research. Devastated by the patient's death he sets out to find answers. First twist in chapter two a weird "cult" town; then a stowaway from the town is in his car as he heads for home. Beautiful Beth has questions of her own, and the mystery deepens when Dr. Corbin finds out she has the same blood anomaly as the person who died. Together they set out to find answers to this mystery. Danger and intrigue follow as the two set out on their quest. They are remarkably fortuitous as they save themselves time and time again following leads to solve their mystery. Each leg of their adventure has a predicament that is more dangerous, and eventually leads to a betrayal that is most alarming. The title fits the book perfectly.
There are more twists and turns in this book than you might find on a steep mountain road. It seemed every three or four chapters the hook reseated itself in me and I could not stop reading. This continued throughout the book to an astonishing ending.
I have read several of Dr. Donaldson's books with Andy and Kit, a CSI series set in Louisiana. He sent me a copy of this book to read and write a review. I am pleased to say I will be reading the rest of his medical thrillers as well. He writes clearly and knows his topics.

Great read. Donaldson's characters come alive and his plot line really cooks. Dr. Carl Martin and Beth Corbin are innocents, not super sleuths or secret agents, but they manage to confront a withering storm of challenges with grit, intelligence and passion.
An international cabal of medical/corporate greed and a bizarre, remote company town in the mountains of Arkansas set the stage for a suspenseful roller coaster that will give your mystery thriller itch an intense and satisfying ride.
Love this author.. I read all of his earlier series, Andy Broussard/Kit Franklyn, several years ago and loved them, however for several years I didn't see any new novels by him. A few months ago my Book Bub sent me a list that included a book in the Andy/Kit series that I hadn't read and I was excited to read it. As always I loved the book!
I then discovered that he was writing medical thrillers and I was delighted to find new books by a favorite author. I immediately read this book and The Killing Harvest and loved them both. I am looking forward to reading the other medical thrillers. Don Donaldson is one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend the medical thrillers and you should also try the earlier Andy Broussard/Kit novels (written as D.J. Donaldson, as they are awesome!
Fascinating thriller dealing with cutting-edge medical research, a complex conspiracy, unforeseen twists and turns complicated by murder. His protagonists are not super sleuths but they get caught up in the conspiracy and end up confronting numerous challenges that seem improbable to overcome. But the great surprise is that Don Donaldson always makes it seem not only possible but very believable that the impossible will be accomplished. Carl and Beth quickly become involved with suspicious characters who do the unexpected! Dr. Martin is also interested in discovering the truth about his father's death and this leads to a betrayal from someone he has known as long as he can remember.
The ending is astonishing and unpredictable and Dr. Martin has his questions finally answered, but at the expense of discovering something that changes everything he ever knew about himself. Beth also discovers something unexpected about herself.
