Upon opening the package I found the spine broken loose from the front hinge, not sure if it was a drop during shipment that caused this, or if there was another problem. BUT, this did allow the spine cover to fall away from the book showing it to be bound nice and tight, should be a long lasting book assuming it stays attached to the cover.Product details

Its got everything! I keep one at home for all my reference needs. Its really handy as an addition to a household library. The scope of subjects covered in the book is truly astounding- science, engineering, math, household knowledge- its a more technical version of a mini encyclopedia.
Every engineer, handman, tinkerer, or DIY'er should have several copies of this book. It (and it's smaller "pocket size" versions) contain a great wealth of useful knowledge. The hardest part is knowing what is in the book, and where to find it, because there are just so many different pieces of information. There are tables for every imaginable piece of hardware, from the size of a "free fitting" clearance hole for a metric bolt, to the weight of a gallon of water, to the thickness of a certain gauge of sheetmetal. I think I own a 1/2 dozen copies of this great reference.
Someone told me about it, and I purchased the Pocket Ref, after spending a couple days with it, I showed it to the building super, his eyes lit up, and he said he had one for years but didn't know what happened to it, so I gave him the Pocket version and ordered the larger Desk Ref, which sits on my desk about 15 inchs from my keyboard. It is a great gift for any tradesman, it has something for everyone, sort of the that could save a costly mistake or your life,(no kidding), one of the best purchases of the year.
This is one of those books that you don't know you need until you start using it. It is filled with all sorts of information that comes in handy when doing any number of things. I liked the pocket version so much (I keep it in the truck with my tools) that I bought the hard cover for my desk. Looking for the specific gravity for your battery - page 37. Insulation value of plywood - page 91. Resistor color codes - page 298. Volume of a pile of gravel - page 730. Density of 316 stainless - page 987.
Fantastic book that covers an amazingly broad selection of topics - if you are wondering about something, look it up in this book, chances are good it's in there. Sure, the internet has all this information - but it also has a lot of misinformation, and sometimes you just need a book.
I bought for my dad as an xmas gift. He doesn't do the internet very well, so he was very excited. It never gets put away in the bookcase. It lives on his desk all the time, and I've noticed more and more pages with folded corners as he comes across useful bits of info.
Granted, I can have access to all this info within seconds on my smartphone, but there is something to be said for having a physical reference that's easy to flip through.
This is the modern day man's book. Let's not be silly about it, people need to know a lot of things... and this book has most of them at your fingertips. Pipe sizes, knots, electrical standards, just about anything a man might need to know to engineer his own solution to problems is in here. I saw a small copy of this book in a shop I went in once and I went to get my own within a day. Never looked back. Now I own this large copy and it is perfect. Tons of info. The best thing about a physical book is that it never needs backing up and no amount of emp can erase it. GET THIS!
