I like the way he illustrates his strategies with examples from his own experience, I think parents will, through them, see echos of their own child in some way through the examples.
He also recognizes that an approach that works well with one child may not necessary work nearly as well for another.
I would DEFINITELY recommend this book, it's written with compassion and love and will prove itself to be a useful and practical guide with ideas, tips and strategies that can be used right away as you go on your journey with your child.

....confusing condition. I have a couple of friends who have children with Autism and wanted to know more. In my conversations with them, it seemed that my understanding was limited and skewed. This book has helped me in understanding that this presents differently in different children and therefore the approach needs to be tailored to the child. The book was easy to read, the flow of the chapters meshed together well and the wealth of information shared will help any who pick it up. Written for the person without training, it is a book that encourages.
While I'm not a parent of a child on the austistic spectrum, I am a teacher who has interactions with children who may be on this specrtum. I found this book easy to read, and practical. The suggestions come from real experience and the stories scattered through the book add to the readability. If your child has recently been diagnosed, or you have been struggling for a long time, this book contains some suggestions that seem workable, and likely to succeed. Definitely worth reading.
My grandson was diagnosed at age 3. I had some previous experience with autistic children many years ago, and had some idea how to manage him, but my experience was only in a classroom setting. Dealing on a personal level is much more demanding and can be frustrating. Many books I have found only deal from a clinical point of view which left me thinking "OK, and????" This book is amazing. I found myself checking off similar behaviors and thinking, "Now this makes sense, this is a great idea." The resource page is great help. Dealing with autism is difficult enough, want a down-to-earth resource, no fancy talk, this book is for you. My thanks.
Great book. I chose to read this book in hopes of gaining a better understanding of what it is like to live with an autistic child. This book is an easy read that really opened my eyes to the many difficulties of both the autistic child and those who live or work with them. I have always thought much of the disruptive behavior could and should be controlled, but I never understood how difficult that could be. This book makes it easy to understand how different methods work for different children and how very difficult it can be for parents or caregivers to discover just what will work with a particular child. My eyes have really been opened to better understand all that is involved not only living with an autistic child but helping them to be the best person they can be. Thank you Alan Yau.
This book does a good job skimming over the more clinical aspects of autism to address the everyday issues for parents trying to figure out the best ways to help their individual children. There are anecdotes about individual children but they do not overwhelm the text and are presented with the caveat that of course each child's responses will be as unique as they are.
One thing I would have liked to see addressed that wasn't was juggling siblings not on the spectrum. It can be hard to find helpful information about that.
This was a good resource that doesn't waste a lot of time on theory (not that that isn't important too, but if you are reading the same theory over and over in every book you pick up it does become a time waster) - it is almost all practical application suggestions.
If your child was diagnosed as being on the Spectrum, the first thing you might want to do is talk with a friend, especially if the friend was your favorite teacher/camp councilor who had a great way with kids, especially kids with autism. Alan Yau is that guy. His book is friendly, practical, down to earth everyday advise. Most importantly he emphasizes the need to make good friends with your child which needs to include fun moments together. Since I have worked with kids on the spectrum and other special needs for 40 years, I really get that engaging children in fun activities, whatever that is for them, is paramount to your relationship and their well being. Yau's book is a good guide on how to do this.

I am dating a man whose daughter is on the autism spectrum. I am a social worker, so I have some experience and training in dealing with special needs kids, but needless to say, it is always different when there is a strong emotional attachment involved. This book have giving me lots of ideas and concrete strategies that her father and I can use to make her life (and ours) more manageable.
