Zackel's mentor Ross Macdonald would be proud. This tight, well-crafted story of a San Francisco private investigator up to his ears in murderous intrigue harks back to the tales of Chandler and Hammett.
San Francisco PD Captain Thomas Harrison sends for P.I. Frank Pasnow to come to the scene of the crime. It looks like a war zone - some type of gang shootout. But the reason Frank is on the scene is because Black Pete Staples, whom Frank worked with and was a mentor to Frank, has been found dead in the trunk of a red El Dorado. The car does not have a bullet mark on it.
Black Pete's son was also in the trunk, shot but not killed. What goes on here?
It turns out to be Frank's job to find out. It's a long and twisted road to a bitter conclusion.
Zackel loads every twist and turn with vivid description and corrupt characters. It's a great read in the classic P.I. vein. Well worth the price. Don't miss this one.
